Butterfield Statement on the SAFE Act, Legislation to Protect Election Security
Washington, D.C. –Today, Congressman G. K. Butterfield made the following statement after the Committee on House Administration passed H.R. 2722, the SAFE Act, an election security bill that provides funding for states to replace outdated and vulnerable voting equipment, mandates paper ballot voting systems and risk-limiting post-election audits and contains strict cybersecurity requirements for election technology vendors and voting systems. The bill is expected to be considered on the House Floor next week.
“It is indisputable that America’s election process was attacked by foreign actors in the 2016 Presidential election, and it will likely be attacked again in the next election in 2020. Protecting our democracy and the sanctity of our ballots should be paramount to Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle. That is why I voted today to pass H.R. 2722 out of the Committee on House Administration and will support its passage on the House Floor next week. The American people should have full faith and trust in our elections and Congress must do all we can to help states secure their election systems so that every vote is counted, and every voice is heard.”
