Butterfield Expresses Condolences on the Passing of Theaoseus T. “T.T.” Clayton Sr., Esq.
WASHINGTON, DC– Congressman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) today issued the following statement on the passing of Theaoseus T. Clayton Sr., attorney and husband of former Congresswoman of North Carolina’s 1st district, Eva Clayton:
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my good friend and mentor, Theaoseus “T.T.” Clayton. T.T. was a man of exceptional character and unequivocal conviction to fight discrimination and push for the equal treatment of African Americans at home and in the workplace. With more than 50 years of legal practice in Warren County, T.T. was successful in enriching the lives of numerous individuals through his successful litigation of Sledge v J.P. Stevens & Co., INC. and his legal representation of those arrested in the environmental justice protests in 1982 opposing the Warren County PCB landfill. A true servant of the people, TT not only was a soldier in the courtroom, but he was also an Army veteran who courageously served his country in the Korean War.
“T.T. took much pride in his career as an attorney and military service, but his greatest pride was his role as a dedicated husband of 63 years, father and grandfather.
“I was fortunate to have a personal relationship with TT, and his friendship throughout the years has made a lasting impact on my life and career. I am eternally grateful for his mentorship and his example as a prominent professional and public figure who truly practiced what he preached.
“My sympathies are with T.T.’s wife, former Congresswoman Eva Clayton, their children Theaoseus Jr., Martin, Reuben, Joanne along with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. This is a great loss that will be felt across the community and the state of North Carolina. T.T. will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.”
