GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) - Construction is complete for the G.K. Butterfield Transportation Center in Greenville.

There was a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday at the location on Pitt Street.

Dozens of city and state leaders attended.

The transfer center will serve as a hub for local and regional transportation.

It is expected to ease congestion and help people reach work affordably.

The facility is named after Congressman Butterfield.

His efforts helped secure federal money for the $8 million project.

"We have had over 600 million dollars of private and public investment in our Uptown area." mayor P.J. Connelly said. "It continues to grow. People have seen how important it is to invest in our center city. We are excited. This is another showcase right in this area."

Routes can transport passengers to the Greenville mall or even New York City.

Operations begin Thursday morning at 6:25 a.m.
