EASTERN CAROLINA, NC (WITN) Long time North Carolina Congressman G.K. Butterfield will be busy drumming up support for legislative priorities.

The First District Democrat's office says that he was appointed to serve as Chief Deputy Whip for the 116th Congress that begins next month.

Butterfield was selected by Majority Whip-elect James Clyburn of South Carolina.

Butterfield will become the first Congressman from the state to serve in the position. He will work with Democratic leadership to help formulate policy and rally members for legislative priorities on the house floor.

Butterfield said in part," We will promote an agenda to improve our economy, create jobs, and help low-and middle-income families. Undoubtedly, there will be new challenges, responsibilities, and opportunities ahead, and I am excited to help lead the Democratic Caucus in this role."
